Artisans hand-carve the designs to be printed into blocks of wood. Depending on the details in the design, each block could take several hours or even days to complete. Once the design is fully carved, the blocks are treated with oil.

Sanganeri hand block print  is a centuries old technique of printing and dyeing using natural dyes from mineral and vegetable sources. This extremely complicated technique uses resist, pigment, mordant and dyeing techniques in various sequences to create printed textiles for use by the local communities. These textiles were objects of desire across the world for many centuries. A specialty of this technique is that the printing is done on both sides of the fabric so that there is no wrong side in the finished textile. Even with the advent of modern printing technology this is very difficult to achieve. A true hand block print would undergo 12 – 16 different processes and use over 25 different blocks. It would require at least four weeks printing this textile.

Sanganeri is a hand-block printing technique originating from Sanganer, a village in the southern part of Jaipur, Rajasthan. This form of textile printing is almost 5 centuries old and till date holds a prominent place in the world of weavers and craftsmen. Other than Sanganer, there are other villages like Bagru, Akola, Barmer, and Jodhpur that are famous for block printing. Delicate patterns and lines with vibrant colored designs are the defining factors for this kind of printing technique.

The simple and creative style of this block printing technique makes it popular amongst all kinds of women across age groups. With technology gaining importance, dyers have started experimenting with unusual color combinations. Overlapping of colors such as like red and pink, or purple and orange is not very uncommon nowadays. This was, however, not possible with the older techniques.
